Universal Basic Income Pilots and Beyond

Forge Collective proudly presents an evening with Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan, Hudson Mayor Kamal Johnson, Hudson Pilot Director Joan Hunt, and HudsonUP Co-Founder Susan Danziger, on Monday, April 5, at 6pm, in a free virtual event open to public. Registration required.

Universal Basic Income, once a fringe utopian idea unknown to most Americans, has become a hot topic as 85% of all citizens including children have received stimulus checks, and over 30 municipalities around the country are conducting or committed to basic income pilots.

Here in the Hudson Valley, Ulster County is starting this social experiment, giving 100 residents $500 a month for a year, with no strings attached. Hudson began its pilot last October with $500/m going to 25 individuals over 5 years.

These pilots are not benefit programs on their own; they are the first steps in determining whether a truly universal, permanent cash program would help our country unite, stabilize the economy, combat inequality, prepare for another pandemic, aid disaster-stricken areas—in other words, catalyze the transformation we need to face the daunting challenges of the 21st century.

In this panel, Executive Ryan, Mayor Johnson, Ms. Hunt, and Ms. Danziger will share why they decided to take this novel step as well as their visions for the future. Our big question of the night—what kind of a community would we want to build with a UBI?

The event will be recorded and published in our Intrinsic podcast.

Keiko Sono, founder of Forge Collective and host of Intrinsic Podcast, will moderate the discussion.

This event is sponsored by Chronogram (media/PR) and Radio Kingston (tech assistance).
